Metagaming: The Cardinal Sin of Roleplay

Living Legends RP • March 2026 • 6 min read

Metagaming is using out-of-character (OOC) information that your character wouldn't know. It's considered one of the most serious rule violations in roleplay communities because it fundamentally undermines fair and immersive storytelling.

What is Metagaming?

Metagaming means using information obtained outside of roleplay to gain advantages in-game. If you watch a streamer and use their location to find them in-game, that's metagaming. If your friend tells you on Discord where a drug deal is happening, using that info is metagaming.

Common Metagaming Examples

Examples include: stream sniping (watching streams to find players), using Discord info in-game, knowing someone's name without them telling you, finding hidden locations because you watched a YouTube video, or referencing events your character wasn't present for.

Why Metagaming Ruins RP

Roleplay is about organic storytelling. When players metagame, stories become unfair and predictable. Criminals can never succeed because cops always know their plans. Surprises become impossible. Trust breaks down, and people stop wanting to create interesting scenarios.

Information Your Character Knows

Your character only knows what they've experienced in-game: conversations they've had, places they've visited, events they've witnessed. Even if YOU (the player) know something, your character might not. Separating player knowledge from character knowledge is essential.

How to Avoid Metagaming

Don't watch streams while playing. Don't share in-game information via Discord unless your characters would share it too. If you accidentally learn something out of character, pretend you don't know it. When in doubt, ask yourself: 'How would my character know this?'
